~NASCAR~

Shawn had a love for racing, it may not have
been as great of love as he had for the
Pittsburgh Steelers, but he loved it.
Davey Allison was his hero, he admired this man so much, but
unfortunately Davey’s life was cut short. I remember the day
Davey died like it was yesterday. Shawn was 19,
I remember my Mom telling him and he started to cry.
He cried like he knew him, which I couldn’t understand
because at the time I personally despised racing.

I got him the Davey poster for Christmas and he loved it.

It was 5 years later I obtained the same and
probably a bit stronger love for this sport.
Shawn & I both were die-hard FORD fans constantly
ragged on one another’s driver. I am a Mark Martin fan,
he was a Dale Jarrett fan and of course anyone
who stepped in the #28 car at the time. It didn’t
matter who drove the car he was a fan of
the #28 Texaco Havoline Taurus regardless.

On Sunday’s Shawn put a small TV beside our big screen
so he could watch the football game, but because he
wanted someone to watch something with him he made sure
the race was on. This was the only way I
would watch with him. I think racing was what allowed
me & Shawn to bond. We had something in common
to talk about. We spent time together looking at different
things on the web; we went to some autograph signings
together and to see the show cars that came around
our town. I somehow made it to a live race
before Shawn did, but when he finally got to go
it wasn’t as great as what I got to experience.
It was in the Busch race at Darlington, SC and
it was so extremely hot, he got really sick and
had to spend about an hour or so of the
race in the medical center. The next day for the
Cup race it rained over half the race.

I truly am thankful for racing and what I believed
allowed my brother and I to have a stronger bond.
